Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and General Electric (GE) have teamed up to produce in-line inspection tools called Smart Pigs to increase Bay Area gas pipeline safety. The Smart Pigs come in two sizes, measuring up to 14 feet long, 30" in diameter, and weighing nearly 2,000 pounds. They contain a series of electronics and magnets, which inspect underground gas pipelines for internal and external wear and damage and then relay GPS information to PG&E technicians. The Smart Pig project is scheduled to inspect up to 206 miles of Bay Area gas pipeline in 2012. Photo by Stan Olszewski/SOSKIphoto.
